Solid Open House

Articulated as a solid architectural mass toward the city, ensuring privacy and calm, while gradually dissolving into a fluid, open structure as one moves inward through a sequence of gardens.

Solid Open House is a private residence conceived as a spatial metamorphosis — from opacity to transparency, from protection to openness. Designed by Felipe Escudero for a family of 4, this 1,200 m² single-family house in Guayaquil is articulated as a solid architectural mass toward the city, ensuring privacy and calm, while gradually dissolving into a fluid, open structure as one moves inward through a sequence of gardens.

The arrival is deliberately restrained: a monolithic exterior shields the domestic life within. Crossing the threshold, architecture softens into landscape. A garden mediates the transition, and the house unfolds into a fully transparent living environment framed by expansive views — the river on one side, lush tropical gardens on the other. Nature becomes omnipresent, shaping light, reflections, and daily rhythms.

The architecture is organized through a series of floating slabs that appear suspended in air, creating layered programmatic zones with clear spatial independence. Living, social, and private areas are stacked and separated vertically, yet remain visually and atmospherically connected. Large sliding panels allow spaces to close for intimacy or dissolve entirely, enabling uninterrupted flow across the house.

This fluidity generates a uniquely liquid spatial experience — one that oscillates between enclosure and release. Movement through the house feels continuous and weightless, encouraging contemplation, stillness, and an intimate relationship with landscape. Guayaquil House proposes luxury not as excess, but as freedom: freedom of movement, of perception, and of living immersed in nature.
